Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother and godparents. Her father abandoned her family. When she was a little girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessional disorder, and also suffered from anxiety due to the word association. Ford began to become interested in acting during her teenage years she joined the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one few weeks, she realized it was not for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure a place on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut when she appeared as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode from the year 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such TV shows such like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Also, she was a regular performer in the theatre, eventually being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedy, which were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
