Her versatility and range in her career as an artist is unparalleled. She has won six Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards, as well as an Emmy Award. Audra McDonald who has won Six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was listed as one of the Times magazine's 100 Most Influential People. The president Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -the nation's most prestigious award to recognize achievements in the field. Born into a musical family McDonald lived in Fresno California and received her classical vocal training at New York's Juilliard School. Her initial Tony Award in 1994 for the best performance of a Featured actress in a musical for Carousel which was staged at Lincoln Center Theater. The following four years she won another two Tony Awards under the featured actress category. These were for her Broadway performances of Terrence McGally's play Master Class and Ragtime. In 2004, she received her fourth Tony acting alongside Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun and in 2012 she won the fifth time and first time for the category of leading actress in the role of her lead as the title character in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. She created Broadway history in 2014 as she became the highest decorated Tony Award performer. The role she played as Billie Holiday at Emerson's Bar & Grill in the show, which also served to launch her Olivier Award nominated debut on London's West End in 2017, was the reason she received six awards. The actress also broke the record for winning the most Tony Awards by an actor. McDonald was also seen in The Secret Garden (1993), Marie Christine (1999), Henry IV (2004), 110 in the Shade (2007 Twelfth night (2009) and Shuffle Along the Making of the Musical Shock of 1921 and All That Followed (2016). She made her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut with Twelfth Nacht (2009). McDonald's first appearance as a dramatic television actor was on the Peabody Award-winning CBS series Having Our Say The Delany SistersThe first 100 years. The actress then starred with Kathy Bates and Victor Garber in the highly acclaimed 1999 Disney/ABC television remake of Annie and, in 2000, was a frequent guest in NBC's smash series Law & Order Special Victims Unit. McDonald's first Emmy came for the HBO movie version of The Pulitzer Prize-winning Wit. The film was directed by Mike Nichols with Emma Thompson as the lead the actress returned to television networks in 2003. The actress starred on Mister Sterling and produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. Then, in the year 2006, she joined WB's The Bedford Diaries. The following year, she became an actor who appeared on NBC's Kidnapped. McDonald's performance in the HBO production Lady Day At Emerson Bar and Grill earned her four times an Emmy nomination in the year 2016. She starred alongside Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale in The Bite a six-episode pandemic-themed drama co-produced by Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios in 2021. In 2009, she played U.S. Attorney Liz Lawrence on CBS's drama about lawyers The Good Wife. In the year 2018, McDonald reprised her role as Liz Reddick as a regular on Paramount+'s The Good Fight. She was awarded three Critics Choice Award nods for the role. Presently, she is a guest star in Julian Fellowes' historical drama The Gilded Age, which is telecast on HBO.
